In 2021, an ambitious plan that had been brewing since 2018 was set into motion. The idea was to create an organization that centered the provision of multiple, direct services to the LGBTQ+ community in Jamaica, powered by the ethos of self-sustainability. Since then, the leadership embarked on a mission to create a groundswell of support for the cause through intensive research, social activations, and other miscellaneous, yet intentional efforts to connect with the Community. These exercises in exploration, coupled with multiples side-quests in experimentation have proven tremendously useful in galvanizing insight into not only the pressing needs that plague us, but also pointed to solutions to alleviating these pain-points.
In the early days of this journey, we navigated the challenges of pandemic lockdowns by engaging in dynamic online community consultations. These discussions laid the groundwork for in-depth data analysis, blending insights from community feedback with existing research. With a clear focus on the realities faced by LGBTQ individuals in Jamaica, we embarked on strategic planning that embraced opportunities for self-advocacy, innovative resource mobilization, and adaptability to shifting global agendas, including evolving donor priorities.
The Birth of Community Fest Jamaica
Community Fest Jamaica, our flagship initiative launched in 2022, burst onto the scene as the ultimate celebration of queer joy and well-being. Designed as a vibrant, month-long Pride festival every June, it started as a series of diverse events connecting the LGBTQ community across Jamaica. Fast forward to today, and it has blossomed into the largest Pride celebration in the country and one of the Caribbean's most dynamic festivals! From cozy 50-person movie nights and soul-stirring poetry readings to intimate gatherings and massive, electrifying raves with over 2,000 attendees, Community Fest is a kaleidoscope of experiences for everyone. Our recent representation at InterPride's World Conference in Medellín, Colombia, has only energized us further to create events that truly reflect the heart of the community. Beyond the fun, these celebrations have helped carve out spaces for advocacy, further propelling us into Jamaica's social and political arenas with messages of inclusion and pride.
Here Comes the Community Centre
After three transformative years, our vision has come to life in the form of the groundbreaking social enterprise that is the Community Centre. Nestled in the heart of Kingston, this one-of-a-kind, multipurpose facility is redefining what it means to serve the LGBTQ community. Uniquely designed to meet pressing and previously unmet needs, such as sensitive medical care, inclusive beauty services, a collaborative co-working space, and a serene green oasis - all in one space. This dynamic hub is not just a building; it’s a bold reimagining of advocacy and empowerment. Home to several leading advocacy organizations, it’s also set to become a launchpad for community members ready to engage in or expand their entrepreneurial pursuits. This isn’t just a milestone - it’s the dawn of a new era. One where self-sufficiency meets collective activism, and where innovation and inclusion pave the way for lasting change.
Here's to the Future
The Community Centre is just the beginning - a launchpad for the collective dreams and aspirations of our community. While it stands as a testament to how far we’ve come and what can be achieved with will and deftly executed strategies, it also sparks excitement for what lies ahead. Our vision doesn’t stop here; we’re gearing up to take our services to the next level, including expanding into the digital space to ensure accessibility for all. This milestone is a foundation for even greater things to come, and we’re thrilled to have you with us on this journey. Stay tuned, there’s so much more in store!
